Roger Moore was super cheesy back in the day and the dalton movies were before my time. I caught 1 or 2 connery movies that were entertaining. Goldeneye the movie and the game in particular defined james bond for me.

Casino Royale wasn't the first time they redefined Bond. Same with Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye, though he was a bit more suave and charismatic than Dalton's Bond.

Tomorrow Never Dies was almost as good as Goldeneye, but a little less serious; but after that movie they started getting ridiculous and campy again.

It's also interesting to note that Martin Campbell directed both Goldeneye and Casino Royale, though he has directed some shitty movies during his career; so maybe their success was more due to the writing staff.

I remember when I was a sheltered pre-teen I discovered on the internet that The Living Daylights was the only Bond film with nudity.

So naturally I went to Blockbuster and grabbed it. Especially when everyone always downplayed Dalton's movies. Dalton got a bad rap because coming off a campy roger moore bond that was iconic in its own way people weren't ready for serious bond just yet.

But his bond is more true to form Bond than Roger Moore ever was, Moore had the suave englishman thing going. Dalton was gritty welsh-man.

License to Kill is my favorite Bond movie. It had some crazy over the top action, some more realistic action, and deep espionage.

It may be because it was the finale of my marathon but I really enjoyed Dalton's Bond. The others are too handsome to disappear in a crowd.

I loved license to kill for the way bond gets Robert Davi Sanches to distrust his entire crew of people, like the boat captain using his own money to kill him.

Underrated I thought and the girl from Law and Order was pretty good as the bond girl pilot. And the best one-liner in all of Bond imo.

When Sanchez is asked what should be done with his blood-stained money, "launder it". I really liked the Timothy Dalton films, I enjoyed the "darker" tone to the films, and the fact that they seemed to be closer to the Bond portrayed in the novels.

Roger Moore was my least favourite bond. It is a shame there are only 2 Timothy Dalton films. All that stuff about him being a 'relic of the cold war' would have made more sense if it was Dalton.

Pierce seemed a little young to have been doing the 00 gig for that long. Dalton only got the gig because Brosnan wasn't free for a huge film like Bond he had some leading role on TV.

Remington Steele , which practically no one now remembers. It wasn't terrible, but then again I was like 9.

He couldn't get out of Remington Steele so they took Dalton. Legal issues ensued with Bond for years and by the time Goldeneye was ready Brosnan was free.

Plus Roger Moore's latter movies when his age became much too apparent took the series down a bit. And they went really far with the cheese.

I love the train scene where Bond meets Vesper for the first time. The repartee between them in the dining car was just exquisite--a perfect battle of wits.

It's not just well written, but Daniel Craig and Eva Green simply have fantastic chemistry. After that, the public didn't want an effete womaniser with a nice watch and very specific tastes in cocktails, they wanted a brute with a tortured soul who could drown you in a fucking sink.

It's hard for him not to be a womanizer considering most of the women Craig's Bond has slept with end up dying soon after.

In casino royale when bond asks for a martini the bartender asks him the infamous "Shaken or stirred? He just replies "Does it look like I give a damn".

Isn't that because Casino Royale is at the start of Bond's double-0 career, and he hasn't yet refined his taste for shaken martinis?

Casino Royale apparently takes place before Dr. No and the rest. This is supposed to be the origin of Bond and his entry into the 00 service. That is unless one considers the Bond series to be of multiple, individual stories that are canon only to their respective actor.

I've mentioned somewhere before that I always thought a new Bond equals a new series, save for the carried over MI6 actors.

I'm also assuming that the producers back in the day didn't know if they wanted to continue telling Bond's story despite actor changes.

Bond's wife isn't mentioned after Majesty until the beginning of Your Eyes Only. Sure, the same gadgets and cars pop up in different films, but I think those are just little homages to the past films, not so much as making the films canon and continuing the story.

I liked Spectre, he pulled a Costanza and went out on a high note. There's a widely held fan theory that and James Bond are both code names.

It isn't legitimate because of the aforementioned wife mentions, and the recent Bond where we find out his damn birth name is apparently James Bond.

I've looked into that one before. It is an interesting theory that could arguably work from the Moore to Brosnan era aside from the wife mention.

That's the one I'm running with as well. It makes total sense and it keeps everything nicely aligned. And it almost got him killed.

He always asks for shaken not stirred because it's harder to poison a shaker and get your target, but you can easily single out one drink with a stirrer.

This is the start of his career in the 00 program, so we are seeing him learn this lesson. It's Bond's Kobayashi Maru.

Shaken is also a weaker drink, by dissolving ice water into it, so you could argue he is trying to not get wasted in order to remain sharp. Similarly to how in Skyfall Q makes a joke about Bond expecting an exploding pen.

Uh, but he calls the bartender back immediately and goes into more detail than I've seen in any Bond movie.

Or that might be a different scene. It's been a while. It is a different scene. Still, the point is he definitely has specific tastes in cocktails.

No, that scene came before. After the first hand of poker, he requests his drink and goes into detail. After losing the first time after the "fake tell," he goes to the bar.

That's why he was pissed. Later in the movie, he gets the drink after winning poker and having dinner with Moneypenny and is amazed of what he concocted.

Basically the comment about him not caring about the drink is utter bullshit. The core of Bond is basically a killer with refined tastes - in goods and women.

I doubt they'll change that. The gadgets can come and go depend on the decade. The camp was initially just a symptom of the times; the producers just stick with it over it became a feature of the movies.

Bourne is Bond without the style or the gadgets. He doesnt use a laser watch or an invisible car, he stabs you with a pencil and shoves a rolled up magazine down your throat.

Once you remove all of the Bond stereotypes Austin Powers spoofed, all that's left is a coldblooded killer spy. While there are some superficial ties between Bond and Bourne, they are still fundamentally different.

Bond, no matter what, is still for queen and country, a cog in the spy network who retains his sense of humor ultimately detached from most situations.

Bourne is all by himself, trying to leave the spy game and be left alone, all business all the time.

How each movie is presented is also strikingly different. Bourne is almost entirely closeup shaky cam. Bond is still glamor shots.

Bourne is often hidden in a crowd. Bond always stands out. Bourne has a score, but doesn't draw attention to itself like Bond. More importantly where does xXx: Bourne was able to maintain a lot more continuity with their use of shaky cam.

Was that partly to do with writer's strikes or something at the time it was made? I think I remember hearing that Craig himself had to help make the film.

I've heard From Craig that Austin Powers was really the inspiration for changing the direction. Well, it was a loving parody to the outlandish Roger Moore-era plots that mostly did work at the time, although everyone admits they got a little carried away with the outlandishness and, ahem, 'following the leader' on occasion I still wonder why they made Moonraker right after Star Wars came out, when they were supposed to make For Your Eyes Only Even back then they were working on toning things down: FYEO itself was a response to the over-the-topness of Moonraker and Bond's over-reliance on gadgetry in general there's a reason one of the first things that happens in that movie is his fully-kitted Lotus exploding into a billion pieces in slow-motion.

I still find it odd that Spectre tried to do this bizarre homage to the same Roger Moore-era setpieces such as a villain with a crater-lair and diabolical torture-death-trap but with the same bleakness of tone that defines the Craig era.

Sean Connery, Jill St. The Pink Panther Live and Let Die The Man with the Golden Gun From Russia with Love Edit Cast Cast overview, first billed only: Vesper Lynd David Niven Sir James Bond Orson Welles Le Chiffre Joanna Pettet Mata Bond Daliah Lavi The Detainer Woody Allen Le Grand John Huston McTarry M Kurt Kasznar George Raft Jean-Paul Belmondo Edit Details Official Sites: Black and White archive footage: Structurally, it's a mess.

The best and most coherent part is at the beginning up to the point where Peter Sellers gets involved, then all of the scenes involving David Niven or his character's and Mata Hari's daughter, Mata Bond, played by Joanna Pettet.

Woody Allen makes his on screen film debut, but comes across as stiff and uncomfortable, even beyond the parameters of the role.

Ursula Andress is convincing as the money obsessed Vesper Lynd. By this point in her career, her English is quite good and she seems comfortable in front of the camera.

Barbara Bouchet as Miss Moneypenny introduced as the original Moneypenny's daughter is excellent. Orson Wells is a lot of fun as Le Chiffre, a baccarat player who does magic tricks, which apparently irritated Peter Sellers no end.

The character Cooper, played by Terence Cooper no relation? There are lots of others interesting performances scattered throughout the film; John Huston, for instance, is terrific as the ill-fated 'M'.

Fortunately, Peter Sellers walked off the picture before he completed his scenes. The downside of that is the fragmentation of the rest of the film.

This is a film that makes most sense to those of us who survived the s. Music is by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

He was enormously popular in the mid-ish s. I think I still have a couple of his LPs somewhere.

This is funnier if you have already seen the more contemporary 'Casino Royal'. If you see that film after this one, as I did, you will find it's weird how many parts they have in common.

Of course reality is changed to confuse the innocent. I like this movie. I find the whole premise of the movie great, a bird-flipping if you will.

The actors are good and the music is great. I know that many would not agree, but I find the ending to be immensely satisfying and funny. The absurdity of the movie is what makes it so great.

However, I can also understand how many would not find my assessment to be relevant to them or their tastes. See all reviews.
